Many of them did have the option of choosing these plans, but didn't. When the ponzi scheme called Social Security was first passed, the benefits were to start at an age BEYOND the average mortality rate of the American worker. IRA's have been around for decades....we used to sell them. ESOP's and things like that were up to the employer to offer, and 401Ks as well. But many didn't choose them even where offered.

These things were always available through your friendly local insurance agent, but the bulk of humanity has no understanding of insurance, and think it's a dirty word and insurance agents are like used car salesmen.

People who didn't prepare have themselves to thank.
