I've only just come across this news; it seems GM crops are being implicated, which would explain why the disappearance rate in Europe is lower, currently, than in the US.

If bees become extinct - and in Texas the population has dropped by 70% - the implications for agriculture are horrific. Einstein allegedly said if bees become extinct, humans are four years behind (no bees=no pollination=no food=no animals=no humans).
