If the police are under no obligation to provide protection why are they constantly trying to do exactly that? And often putting themselves in harm's way in the process?

I assume you mean that they cannot guarentee protection for everyone, and this is true of any police force anywhere in the world, including those countries that have outgrown a gun culture.

Virginia is a state that allows the right to carry. Earlier this year the legislature passed legislation that allowed the State Universities the right to deny students the right to carry. Upon passage President Casteen of VT applauded the legislature in the efforts to make the students of his university safer. Tell me, how safe are those 31 students that died??

Do you really want a society where students have to go to school armed for fear of being shot?

So despite guns not being allowed on the campus, people were still killed by them. Hmmm gun control laws only work when people are willing to follow them, which means that only the law abiding have to fear for their safety.

Why is the US the only industrialised nation that encourages gun ownership for self-defence, yet it has by far the highest rate of gun-related crime and homicide?

I agree it's about a lot more than just passing gun control laws. The US will somehow have to rid it self of the cancer it's unique and deadly gun culture before sense can prevail.

The good news is that almost every other industrialised nation has managed to achieve just that, proof that it can be done.
