Um. Speaking of 50/50.

"In humans, the fetal stage is the from the end of the third month until birth"
define:fetus - Google Search

There is a LOT of stem cell research that can be done before the embryo reaches "fetus" stage.
In fact, the bill in question actually deals with EMBRYONIC stem cells.

CNN.com - Bush vetoes embryonic stem-cell bill - Sep 4, 2006
"The measure, which the House of Representatives passed in May 2005, allows couples who have had embryos frozen for fertility treatments to donate them to researchers rather than let them be destroyed. "

So let's be perfectly clear. These embryoes would have "died" anyways.
And unlike abortion, I have seen NO attempt to legally restrict fertility clinics which do have to regularly dispose of extra frozen embryos which are no longer wanted or desired.
We're talking about EMBRYOS here.

And if your definition of life starts at "conception", then so be it. I don't agree.
But the truth is that while some Americans have problems with fetuses being used in stem cell research, a majority of Americans WANT embryonic stem cell research.

I felt it important to draw the distinction because of your phrasing.
