However, I think he has to realize one thing. The Republican Party is no longer the Party of Goldwater 'small-government' conservatism. Now it is the Party of statism and mindless Christian fascism. He has no chance getting elected by the Republican base who have been accepting the Party line no matter what it was (after all, they've went almost a full 180 in ideology without a peep). If he was nominated however, he might have a sure chance of winning the general election; but in terms of the nomination...no way.

The ideology of the Republican Party is the Party. Party loyalty must be maintained.

I'm pretty sure he knows this, as I can see he's a very smart man. However, I believe he's just trying to give an alternate opinion in the dynamic, and perhaps try and wake up old Goldwater conservatism.
