fill pot with salt water, boil it with the cloth over it, the water will evaporate and be caught in the cloth leaving the salt in the pot, extract water(now no salt) from cloth and there ya have it.....BASIC desalination

HIo, I believe you missed the point somewhere. We was not speaking
about that stage yet. Because we was talking about water world wide,
and I am sure you can't boil the ocean.
However you are right about boiling a pot full of water.
