His mistake -- or crime, if you want to call it that -- was not shooting when he felt endangered but giving chase in the first place.

Even then, if he had only followed long enough to get a good description and tag number, it would have been understandable.

But, for goodness sakes, call the cops! The way he handled it was vigilantism and only served to put the store owner and his wife (and the burglers) in more danger than necessary.
