Personally, I think it's more of the X-Files version, namely, spacecaft came down from Alpha Centauri and used their space lasers to 'dustify' the twin towers (circa War of the Worlds, 50's version).

They of course used their cloaking devices so we couldn't see them, and also used their hypno-rays to make everyone in the world think they actually saw planes flying into the buildings.
