To the southerners progress wasn't good if it meant giving minorities equal rights.

Thus, the Republicans inherited the conservative Bible belt. It was only a matter of time before the conservative Christians overtook the almost libertarian-like traditions of the Republican Party. Instead of the small-government Republicans switching to the Democratic Party, many of them stayed due to party loyalty (and in a process of brain washing are duped into supporting a big-government and big-business party), while some went independent.

I think that you are right. I don't remember knowing anyone that professed to being a Republican when I was a child. Most Alabamians were "Yellow Dog Democrats." (As in, I'd vote fer an ol' yeller dog afore I'd vote fer a Republican!")

Then the Democratic party came down on the "wrong" side of the Civil Rights Movement and all the bigots switched parties.

During the 70s & 80s, I wish that I had kept count of the number of headlines in Alabama newspapers that read something like "Smith First Republican Elected To (Fill in Blank) In 100 Years."

Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.
