Society is protected against bigotry and predjudice through education and basic kindness.

"Excessive" punishment and easy prosecution hurts EVERYBODY.

I find it hysterical that those with left-leaning politics (where the support for "hate crime" legisltation usually comes from) will argue night and day against law enforcement and justice being too "heavy handed" UNLESS it involes "hate crime." Then, for some weird reason, they start to sound like Charles Bronson and Dirty Harry.
