Well, the fact that our justice system (usually) errors on the side of the individual, rather than the state, protects us all.

Sure, it makes for an interesting news story and pisses everybody off when it makes a break for a guy like this. But, what doesn't make the news is the 5,000 really innocent and good people who weren't needlesly dragged through the system that very same day because of the protections our system offers the individual.

Plus, I don't think there's any actual threat from this particular guy. As it is now, with all the publicity, he can't fart sideways without the whole country knowing about it.
