Yes, hope lies with the proles.

"Until [the proles] become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious."
-George Orwell, 1984

Unfortunately, I believe Orwell had most accurately depicted this dilemma that we face.

The general mass of the working class is (like in Orwell's society) in a state of ignorance perpetuated by superficial distractions and fear, to a point where accepting the propaganda is the norm.

If they only knew their power...there's a lot of reason for social revolution. Heck, I believe even if our founding and revolutionary forefathers had been alive (a group of bourgeoisie classical liberals) they would, even in a mere political revolution, pick up this country and turn it on its head.

But, speaking primarily in political terms, this revolutionary classical liberal spirit that made America America is now just about gone. Now it seems that if anyone talks about anything regarding revolution or cutting back the expansive role of the military and government, or even taking the political power from the banks and the rich and putting back in the people's hands...well that's just unamerican!
