True, and we don't know where that money goes. Like state and town taxes one would assume would go to the needs of the states, like road upkeep and whatnot, but too much goes into paychecks for the bureaucracy, and here anyway, the roads are shite and the taxes are high.
Journalist David Ashenfelter wrote for the Detroit Free Press 23 May 2001:
Quote:
A Wayne County jury deliberated barely 90 minutes Tuesday before awarding $6 million to the family of a Redford Township man who was shot to death in a dispute with an off-duty Detroit police officer in 1998.

"The duplicitous and illegal conduct of the Detroit Police Department has now come home to roost," Southfield lawyer Geoffrey Fieger said after the jury announced its decision. Fieger said the department tried to cover up a bad shooting by exonerating the officer and giving him a commendation for his actions.
This is just one example of where your tax money goes. What should happen is that the award should be taken from the police budget. When salaries begin to shrink, and the department has to work with bare bones equipment, then maybe they will begin to weed out the recalcitrants instead of covering for them.
