I bet the teacher was shocked at first. In my first Japanese-English dictionary (a 1950 something edition as gift from my grandparents), a rubber was covering slipped over a shoe to prevent the shoe from getting wet. I did not realize it was also slang for a condom. I though, why would I want to protect my shoe when during sex? I quickly bought a new dictionary....
