Those often aren't the only holidays at that time. Chanukkah and Kwanzaa are often in December. Not ALL kids celebrate those holidays. Making a more secular celebration of the season allows all the kids to feel included without making someone feel bad for being Jewish, Wiccan or any other religion. It allows kids to have no religion at all to feel a part of the festivities without preaching to them.
