I don't believe that these kids shouldn't be punished for the assault. But it is the charges by the prosecutor that have so many outraged. It was not attempted murder, and he should not be looking at 22 years for this. And also, any of the white kids that were involved in violence there, should be charged as well. You have white kids punching blacks, and nothing happens. So it is really about equal protection under the law. And a 3 day in school suspension is not a severe enough punishment for white kids using the symbolism of lynching to cause fear and to antagonise the black kids. The school is 85% white already.
