It's not really GOP mindset. It's just people in general.

Abortion is wrong, until I have a pregnancy I don't want.
Interracial marriage is wrong, until I fall in love with someone of another race.
Why don't the cops clamp down on speeders, until they catch me.
Red light cameras are a great idea, until they catch me.
Gay people are nasty, until I get horny in an airport restroom.

This is such bullshit. Either you know something is wrong or you don't. His daughter being gay doesn't make it all of a sudden "ok".
