I don't know that I would say that the younger generation has always been less religious than the previous one. Certainly that has been the case in the last two generations, but I really can't speak for the time beyond that point.
I suspect that people become 'more religious' as they get older because of an inborn fear of their own mortality. as they approach an age where the immortality complex, that most young people have, wears off, they turn to religion as a way of extending their lives beyond the mortal realm. |
I am not sure how a generation is defined or how many generations ago it was that I was 18.
I do know that when I was in that age group (18-22) there was a major movement toward religion amongst my peers.
People tend to think of the "hippies" that came of age in the 60s & 70s as hedonists. But there was a major spiritual element to the counterculture movement.
It was expressed by many through the exploration of what has come to be known as "new age" religion. But there was also a major Christian element known as the Jesus Movement.
