dmk | This is exactly the problem, Sarge. I personally do not agree with the use of such language (Being Black, I catch a lot of static from other Blacks because of this); because it only creates the larger problem that you have mentioned, Sarge. Many Black comedians (almost all, I should say) use what I refer to as "Black ignorance" in their repetoire- which will also be laced with this word. And everybody thinks it is funny. But tell me, if Jerry Sienfeld started using "nigger" jokes at his shows; what would be the result?
I can tell you with no uncerainty whatsoever. Every Black civic leader would be up in arms. And my favorite opportunist, Al Sharpton would be leading the charge; with all of them screaming "race".
Sarge is correct here, people. Not because I myself am Black and agree with him; but simply because one action will invariably lead to the other action I referred to earlier. This would be okay if both sides agree that this is acceptable behavior- but they won't and never will.
We Blacks must understand that in our open use of this word, that it is we who are initiating the start of the racial arguments sure to follow. The only answer is that we not use such language to which all others will understand that we do not like being referred to in such words.
But this is a process that must begin with the raising of our children. It will have to be we must stop allowing ourselves to use such language among ourselves first; before we can ever hope that others will not do so. |
