You're overlooking all the other times you contribute to health insurance costs indirectly, which is almost every time you open your wallet (handbag in your case) swipe a card or write a cheque.

Car payments, groceries, airline tickets, they all include a percentage to cover health insurance.

Even Starbucks, who spend more money on health insurance than on coffee.

No matter what your political preferences it's just hugely inefficient. And there are still 47m UNinsured.
