Good news this, although the Rudd Government has drawn the line at same sex marriage, these changes are certainly a step in the right direction.

In just six months, Rudd has done more for the gay community than Howard did in over a decade of power, and that is something to be commended.

When I read that Australia under PM John Howard had banned gay marriage in 2004 (perhaps gripped by the same homophobic panic the USA was in after the Canada decision in 2003), I really was surprised. I had thought the Australian people to be more tolerant and fair-minded than that.

And given this turnaround news, it appears I was right to think so.
