| Is it possible to just debate gay marriage itself? Ok, every topic on here that I have read (and yes, even participated in) has seemed to gravitate toward more of a debate on homosexuality itself than on the specific topic of gay marriage. That's all well and good, and I love the forum this site provides to do so, but let's try to leave this topic here as only ideas and opinions that are strictly about gay marriage, and not going into whether you think being gay is natural or unnatural, wrong or right, a mental illness or genetic trait, etc. Because those things are fun to discuss and all, but they quickly overshadow the subject of whether or not two people of the same gender should be able to marry. So I'll start with my opinions strictly on the matter of gay marriage.
I think that gays should be able to marry in my country because the country was founded on the principles of equality for all, not just a select group, or even the majority. And just like a woman should not be denied a job on the basis of her gender, that same woman should not be denied the right to marry another woman, just because she is a woman herself. Of course the same goes for men, although it seems weird to talk about a man being denied anything on the basis of his gender, but here we are. And we should not go by any religious views of who should be able to marry who, because the Constitution expressly forbids making laws based on any religion. It's one of the principles this nation was founded on.
Please, if you weigh in on any side of the debate, provide a real reason for your opinion. For example, if you think that gays marrying would somehow "destroy marriage", then please say why you think so. Thanks. |
