Gavin Newsom - Marriage Hypocrite January 6, 2005: Mayor Gavin Newsom and his Court TV analyst wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, announced "with great sadness" the end of their 3-year-old bicoastal marriage in a brief statement issued late Wednesday by the mayor's City Hall press office.
"Unfortunately, the demands of our respective careers have made it too difficult for us to continue as a married couple," the pair said in the statement.
Several friends of the couple, who would speak only on condition of anonymity for fear of alienating them, said the split came as little surprise.
"It's no secret that they have been leading separate lives,'' said one close friend. "She's on one coast, he's on the other -- how can you make a marriage work like that?''
The friend said both are strong personalities and needed someone to be with -- but Guilfoyle Newsom wasn't interested in abandoning New York, where she has a job with Court TV and makes other media appearances, and the mayor obviously is in no position to move East.
Several months ago, Guilfoyle Newsom herself told family and friends she had "never signed on'' to be a mayoral wife -- something others found hard to believe, given the high-profile and politically tinged wedding the couple staged for 500 people at St. Ignatius Church in December 2001.
In 2004, the return trips became less and less frequent. For Newsom's birthday, she bought him a set of luggage, in hopes he might visit her more often. |
