A Small History Pride-let for May 20
On this day in 1994, officials from of 35 right-wing "religious" organizations (including the Christian Coalition, Concerned Women for America, The American Family Association, Accuracy in Media, Colorado for Family Values, Family Defense Council, and Family Research Council) meet in Colorado Springs to destroy gay rights forever.

"Enemies" lists of politicians and journalists will be created; they will "push the idea that organized crime funds the gay rights movement" and "fight to recriminalize sodomy, repeal all gay rights laws, establish reporting requirements for HIV infection, ban federal funds for public schools which support gay students, pass a national statute 'guaranteeing free speech and association on college campuses' (but only for Christians) stiffen penalties against 'unfounded threats and hate crimes charges against pro-life/pro-family groups,' support preference for heterosexuals in child custody cases, enact legislation 'rewarding conventional families' with tax rewards, formulate 'the best case to take to the U.S. Supreme Court in their fight to deny civil rights for all gay men and lesbians', identify and recall all judges who disagree with their groups agendas, use gays 'as a scapegoat in the face of continuing economic despair among many classes in this country', and convert ministers to anti-gay agenda even though 'they know if gays ever left the church, they'd lose at least one-half their organists and choir members.''

Conservatism: Self-centered mean-spiritedness fueled by ignorance and misguided self-importance.

Bigotry is a social disease.

Legalized same-sex marriage almost certainly benefits those same-sex couples who choose to marry, as well as the children being raised in those homes. - David Blankenhorn is president of the New York-based Institute for American Values and the author of "The Future of Marriage."
