Every belief can be called a religion. It is a way to gain the approbation of whatever or whoever one makes their god.

So if one is a self-important, pretentiously pious, sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, know-it-all, they are gaining the approbation of their god, their SELF IMPORTANCE, and the desperate need for approval of their own self.

Worshipping THAT god may well include moral sins against society, one's fellow man, and against the one True God.
