sensible parents. suicide is always serious. i hope the treatment isnt restricted to drugs only. if her doctor just says "keep taking these for the rest of your life and your chemical imbalance will be normal again" she might do better with another doctor.

i have also seen parents who say their teenage children "talk back" (like thats not expected) or they have a 3 year old who "has to be told everything repeatedly". they ask for drugs to treat what are completely normal kids.

there is no question that psychatric problems are serious and can be life threatening. also no question that drugs can do wonders and be life saving. but these kinds of problems are relatively uncommon compared to life events that are not life threatening, not that serious and not even problems, just part of life. in the 21st century, life events have been redefined in many peoples minds as a medical condition.
