The very strange thing is how you said that about the word IDIOT. Cos at one time that was an acceptable word for the cognitively challenged. Even still there is the acceptable term idiot-savant when one shows exceptional gifting in one area in spite of their deficit.
And yet now people that are homosexual like the word gay even though it is becoming fast a word that means the same as idiot, and yet they foam at the mouth in anger at the term homo even though it is only a derivative of the word for what they claim to be, in clinical terms: HOMOsexual.
