There were also small riots in Germany going through the same system.

The economist is such a slanted magazine. Not a very good source for unbiased information (and over-priced to top it off).

If the riots were caused solely by the economy and unemployment you would see white folks rioting as well. This just isn't the case. This is a racial issue:

It wasn’t racial; the poorest people in France are immigrants. They just happen to be Islamic. They are rioting because they can’t find a job. When 25 percent of your population is unemployed you have problems.
It is racial. Two north African immigrant kids hid from police in a power station and got electocuted. That is how the rioting started.

There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence.
