It depends on whether you consider self-awareness as an integral part of thinking. I would agree, and aside from lucid dreaming, I believe it is possible (as it has happened to me) to be self-aware within the dream, but completely unaware of the 'true' reality of my sleeping.
Is time an actual dimension of reality (i.e. does it take on an existence in-itself) or is it merely a relation only definable within the context of events as I believe coberst was talking about? It seems to me that modern science considers time in the latter category. When scientists speak of space-time they're really talking about something that's one in the same; that both are inseparable from the other.
It's impossible to 'experience' time without events or movements. Even if you're able to remove everything beyond your self, even consciousness itself is an event.
One thing worth mentioning is Einstein's contribution that indeed time isn't universally static but relative with motion. | Yea I watched a history or science program on Einstein in relation to time and was scratching my head for a day or two...
As addressed in the first paragraphs of the original post movement and time is really hard to put into context. I think the reason this is is because it is nearly impossible to separate instinct from reason and logic as used by the thought process. One could argue that lower forms of life do not think but rely on instinct alone or have a limited thought ability. The complexity of instinct could turn off logic and reason without a person being aware a logical possibility exists. Very small living things have very complex programming, for example here in PR there is a termite that is extremely tiny that lays dormant until a shower in conjunction of a full/new moon... then it awakens and deploys its wings and flies toward the moon until its wings fall off... well, you can see how street/home lights could screw up such a programming and it does resulting in infestations in homes everywhere. People also could be equally be confused by their instincts and dismiss possibilities or contribute reality to something that isn't reality. A couple days ago I was throwing trash in my trash can and time stood still suddenly as a cat leaped out of the can strait over my head within inches... it was like watching a slow motion dramatization of a bullet heading to strike between the eyes. So where does instinct begin and end in relation to thinking, are there toggle switches that sometime trip like overload or under-load allowing other possibilities? Is instinct in charge or could logic and reason overpower instinct to reveal a differing reality, who knows it would be like holding your breath or slowing your heart beat...
The 2012 doomsday time relation to the above turns science on its head kind of like animals abilities to instinctively predict impending disaster. If one could clearly separate thought from instinct then possibly the answer would be clear? Do other living things experience time or only humans with developed thought process? mouse, mice
