- Damn, just stating pro/con positions on abortion doesn't quite do justice to the topic. Morally, I find the process objectionable, especially when used as a means of correcting irresponsible behavior. I believe there is sufficient evidence to support the position that life begins at conception or shortly thereafter.
I do not concede that it's the woman's sole right to abort the baby. Babies are not created by women . . . it requires a male and a female, even when the process is through artificial insemmination.
My issue is with government intervention in to the issue, especially the federal government. There is no justification for financially raping the taxpayers to fund an abortion to irresponsible women (and men who donate the sperm). State and local government, as well, should not commit financial resources to provide abortions to anyone.
Furthermore, the man should have an equal say in the process, else if the woman is given the sole option of terminating the life of the unborn, than the man should be alleviated from having to pay any form of support. You don't get it both ways. If that male has no say in the process, than he is not responsible financially.
There is also much legal precedent justifying government intrusion. For example, if women have the right to do with their body as they please, then so does everyone else. For example, women should have no say in whether or not a newborn male is circumcised. It is not their body they are mutilating, and don't go down the "it's a health issue," as it rarely evolves to that. Drug addicts ought to have the rights (which I support) to inject their bodies with whatever the hell they want. I'll donate. The crime is occurs when they harm another individual or take property that is not theirs to support their drug habit. The ingestion of drugs is not a crime--a sickness, perhaps, but not a crime. Yet, in this latter case, the government intercedes. Just look at the prison industry and the number of inmates we hold as political hostages.
Bottom line, I believe the issue is best left at the hands (and conscience) of the man and woman responsible for the life. Personally, if my mate were to seek an abortion (especially without my input), she would cease being my mate. As I stated, I find it akin to murder. But I do not believe I have the right to impart my beliefs in this regard upon the next couple.
