The original Republican and Democratic parties had little or nothing in common with the modern parties.

The Democrats didn't become the Northern, 'liberal' party until the 1920's and 1930's, and the Republicans didn't become the Religious Right party until the 1950's and 1960's.

Therefore, honoring anything more than 60 years of any sort of achievement is stupid, because at that point, the Republicans were a totally different party.
