Considering Ramzi Yousef failed his attempt to take down one of the WTC buildings in 1993, I would think Al Qaeda would want a second successful attempt at taking down the buildings (in that case, 9/11)
Considering it was muslim extremists who got past security, hijacked the planes, and flew them into the WTC, yes I do think it was Al Qaeda!

A B-52 hit the empire state building. It did not collapse... fire was put out in 40 minutes.
A firefighter (captain or whatever) was on the 78th floor of the WTC and had a plan to extingish the fire. He would have been sucessful if the towers had not been brought down by demolitions.
