Israel is strategically important to the United States for a number of reasons. However, Israel most certainly cannot fight its own battle, because it would destabalize the entire Middle East. If America attacks one country, that country is destabalized. If Israel attacks one country, the rest of them jump all over Israel like a pack of wolves. Six Day War, Yom Kippur War... Need I go on?
That, and there's the whole 'population' thing.
While serving in the IDF is mandatory, Israel is still only the size of New Jersey. There are more Jews in New York City than in Israel, and the population of Israel is about 80% Jewish. That means that America has more soldiers in its pinky than in Israel's entire body. | Has it ever occurred to you that Israel has been in just as many human rights violations and violations of the geneva conventions as some of our 'enemies'? Israel being an "ally" reminds me of how Saddam was an "ally" because of the US's "strategic importance" over the Russians, or perhaps how the CIA's creation and funding of the Al-Qaeda was "strategically important" over the Russians. The enemy of our enemy isn't our friend. Frankly Israel with WMD's is perhaps just as or more dangerous than Iraq with WMD's.
But obviously the prospect of Iran, Iraq, or Israel having weapons of mass destruction are nowhere as dangerous as the United States possessing stock piles of weapons of mass destruction. American politicians freak out when Iranian politicians talking about "wiping Israel off the map". But then they turn around and threaten to nuke Mecca if a nuclear terrorist strike was to happen America. The United States is the largest exporter of terrorism in the world, and it also has one of the largest stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction in the world.
