However, I've seen it explained pretty clearly - even interviewing the architect. Weakening - through extreme heat from burning fuel - of the central support structure would easily cause the building to START to collapse. And it would do so "towards the center". And believe me, once the floors start collapsing, there is simply too much weight to stop.
