Perhaps earlier, but I think today's Democratic Party is much different, as is the Republican Party. The American political landscape changed drastically after 9/11, and even moreso after neo-conservatives were trying the new experiment of pre-emptive warfare (although its more like preventive warfare).

Don't get me wrong though, there are Democrats which like to restrict certain freedoms. But overall I can't think of anything really other than perhaps big restrictions on the second amendment. But please do correct me. I know liberal parties in different countries like to ban certain speech such as racial, anti-semetic, or other "hate speech", but I haven't really seen an American Democrat support those kind of restrictions.
