First off, I'd say if you are hunting from a mile away you are a fantastic hunter. There is a reason that Snipers are considered the best marksmen in the world. Secondly there is other large game besides bears.

Finally, what if you simply want the weapon to hone your skills? I own several .50 caliber weapons. I think some of you may be mis understanding what constitutes a .50 cal and what claiber means....

Caliber is a ratio of the width of the projectile vs. the length og the barrel of the weapon. Therefore it is not always an equal size.

When I say .50 caliber most of you seem to be picturing this;

However a .50 cal can also be any of the following...

All I am trying to demonstrate here is that by banning a 'caliber' of weapon, you are making a broad, sweeping ban. It may seem specific, but it is not at all, and you are protecting no one, making nothing safer. The simple fact of the matter is that criminals do not get their guns legally any way.
