He's not going to be THE closer. Terry Francona and Theo Epstien explained everything on TV yesterday. Basically, Schlling's being used in the bullpen for two reasons. First, out of the bullpen it will be easier for him to work back up to full strength where he can throw 100+ pitches every 5 games. Secondly, while helping himself, Schilling can also help the team by being a dominant pitcher in the late innings (yet to be proven). It works both ways. The only reason they're doing this is because Foulke is on the DL with a knee injury, and if he gets surgery he's out 4-6 weeks. The plan is that Schilling can perform in the bullpen, and then start when Foulke is healthy.
