Was this the first attempt to execute him?
Sometimes, inmates are put on death row and their execution is postponed due to additional legal questions that are to be addressed. The thought of not being sure at your own end can be stressful.

Or, the very thought of waiting for his execution could have been too much for him. The article states that it is "customary" for the guards to check on him every 15 minutes. I suspect that is because he was scheduled for execution that day.
And I suspect that this sort of thing is precisely why they check so frequently...
