Let me put it to you this way - drug users are going to use drugs whether or not they are legal. So why not legalize them? And then tax the ever living stew out of the people who use them!
Think about it. A lot of our "budget deficit" concerns would be washed away in a heartbeat.
I think the main problem with people who are against legalizing drugs is that they don't want people to "hurt" themselves. I hate to put it this way, but (frankly) who cares? Our founding fathers, when they wrote the Constitution, believed in limited government involvement in the ordinary state of affairs of ordinary individuals. They did not believe, in other words, of telling other people what's good for them and what's not.
In early America, the primary function of government was simply to deliver the mail. No more, no less. So, why do we have all these "agencies" nowadays? Why, when we have a problem (like drugs), do we turn it over to government to solve it for us? Is it because we value "security" over freedom? Is it because we are "dumbing down?" Or, is it because we are ignorant of what the constitution really was written for and about?
The good news is that ignorance can be cured through education. . . stupidty can't.
So, let stupid people do stupid things like use drugs. Their problem can't be cured. They were born that way!
Thanks, and PLEASE - feel free to disagree with me! I love a good debate!
- Nightrider | I agree with you about government regulation. I never have understood how the government determines which "poisons" they should allow and which they shouldn't. Alcohol and tobacco are at least as dangerous as marijuana. The addiction factor has more to do with an individual than the drug of choice. If someone has an addictive personality, they risk addiction of some type, be it alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, etc. Whereas I can have a one cocktail and not touch the stuff for another year, someone with an addictive personality cannot take even one drink without binging. If we could find the cure for the addictive personality, none of the legal or illegal drugs would be a problem because it's unlikely they would be abused. It's a fascinating subject though. Did you know this:
"It is important to remember that drugs were not always illegal in the United States. One hundred years ago, there were no drug laws. It was possible to buy cocaine at any corner pharmacy. One could purchase heroin through the Sears-Roebuck catalog. Heroin was invented in 1898 by the Bayer company – also famous for its aspirin – and was sold as a cough suppressant for people suffering from tuberculosis. "
Yep - if you wanted heroin, all you had to do was fork over $1.98 for a supply including the syringe. Apparently the biggest abusers of this were middle class women living in rural areas of American. |
