With WWII and the Civil War we knew who was the enemy and how to stop them. Even guerrilla wars can be stopped with special tactics, but we don't use them too well. That's why we're failing in Iraq. First, we never considered the implications of "freedom" for the Iraqis, and second we didn't know how to deal with the inevitability of post-Saddam resistance and lawlesness.

Any military commander with half a brain will tell you that in order to succeed, you have to stop the problem at it's source, not rely on the enemy's first strike to dictate your actions.

Yes, World War II was a war that (in my mind) needed to happen; as the same with a few others. I see this war in Iraq (if I can quote George Carlin) as a bunch of prick waving. The assault on Afganistan was needed; not only as revenge, but also to keep it from happening again. Now, I will not say that my friends have either died or put their life on the line for vien; but come on...Bush, just like so many other times, did not use his brain. The roll into Iraq was not only obtusely planned, but was inacted without proper sanction. This "War on Terror" is going a bit too far (ie Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act). Not long ago, harsh words were able to be used freely (duh freedom of speech), now we have imposed or apprehention of a terroristic threat, because some dumb drunk decides to speek his mind. Those words like 'I'll get you back', 'Revenge is a bitch', 'I know where you live/work', and other "steamed" words will now land a chap in jail. Needs no nevermind whether there was intent or if it was only verbal frustration. You can only take so much 'rule' bending before someone (who is almost obligated as an AMERICAN) needs to step up to the plate and go toe to toe with 'the man'. I love being an American, I love freedom as well; but there is a fine line betweem duty and greed. I've seen too many kids, just out of high school, die for their country for something that I feel, could have been delt with in another fashion...or at least an attempt made.
