There are more people who immigrate to the United States each year than the number of people immigrating to all the other countries of the world COMBINED. That makes immigration - both legal and illegal - a unique problem to us. We're not going to get proper advice or leadership from anybody else in the world (as if that ever happens anyway).
1. Admit that our current system concerning immigration is NOT working.
2. Be honest about the problem, and where it's coming from. 57% of illegals in America are Mexican, and 75% are of Latin American origin.
3. FORCE the Mexican government to get serious about this problem. Mexico has some of the strictest immigration laws in the world (which is ironic, considering that NOBODY is wanting to immigrate into Mexico). But the Mexican government MUST be held accountable for its share of this problem. If they won't cooperate, we annex Mexico. Cripes, we're half-way there anyway. We already provide most of the "services" that Mexicans receive already.
4. Be honest about why people not only want to come to the US, but want to leave their own countries. Most immigrants are fleeing poverty and war. They're not necessarily bad people. They're trying to survive.
5. Build the frickin' fence along the US/Mexico border. It's not going to solve the problem, but it's one piece of the puzzle.
6. Change the law so that a baby born to illegal parents, who slipped across the border while about to give birth, does NOT automatically become and American citizen.
If the parents aren't citizens, neither is the baby.
7. Change
immigration laws. Simplify them. Expedite them. Make it at least POSSIBLE for a Mexican to enter the country legally. (*This will include FORCING the frickin' corrupt Mexican government to clean up its own act too.)
- Also, make it so that companies who want to hire Mexicans can actually KNOW whether or not they have the proper documentation.
- Hold the companies accountable for hiring illegals. Make it a $10,000 fine, per illegal immigrant hired, that is paid directly into Social Security. This might begin to offset the cost of illegals, as well as inspire diligence.
8. Change
citizenship laws. I was leading a focus group last night, and one of the things we did was try to answer 100 of the questions that are asked on citizenship tests.
I'll PROMISE you that most American citizens could NEVER pass the citizenship test! Make it so that it's at least possible to pass them. Update the questions. One question is, "What are the colors of the American flag?"
Well whooptie doo! Drop that question and replace it with something relevant to the 21st Century!
9. Politicians need to be more diligent about enforcing immigration laws then about getting re-elected.
That's a list for starters... Rant away.
