You title the thread Are the Republicans, but then the entire article you reference is about the New Democrats in the Western states, who are fiscal conservatives and moderate on social issues.

The problem with Republicans, is that they have forgotten what got them to the majority in the first place, and have become enamored with power. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Thus we saw them swept out of power, much the same as were the democrats in 1994.
