The point is that as the situation in Iraq has worsened, the military has been the first to see this and the least prejudiced by the media or the administration. After 9/11 and the initial invasion of Iraq & Afghanistan, everything was coming up roses, but now, not so much. Most now oppose Iraq, and they're a lot less optimistic about victory.
I consider military opinions more valuable than those of the general public, because most of us have never seen the war firsthand, but if your soldiers think you're not handling the war well, then you've got a problem.
