And I do not deny what a few whites went through to end slavery. I think it's highly naive, however, to think that whites ended racism and slavery. The civil war wasn't fought over slavery. It was over a number of things, including the preservation of the union and state's rights. The union winning the war obviously boosted the end of slavery quicker, but union soldiers weren't fighting over ending slavery. Racism in this country ended, and a relative public conscience and respect for other races only emerged after a civil rights campaign led by African-American leaders. Quote:
