That is a day that is seared into my memory...
I was working in Queens that day in an office with a big picture window that overlooked the Manhattan skyline. I was busy processing some paperwork when one of the other officers said "Hey, a plane just hit the World Trade Center!" Of course we all stopped and went to look out the window. We all thought that it was just a stupid pilot that had flown a plane into the tower. After watching and discussing for (I guess) about 15 minutes I turned to go back to my desk. That's when one of the guys said "A plane just hit the other tower." We all looked at each other for a minute and then turned on the radio.
I think that the most disturbing part of the day was watching the second tower come down. We were all standing outside at that point and we had a clear veiw. I had never felt as helpless in my entire life as I did when I watched that building collapse on top of itself. I felt history happening before my eyes but I mostly remember regretting that we had never taken the children up to the Observation Deck. It may seem an odd thought, but I was completely numb at that point. |
