1. Making prison a living hell would not deter crime. The proof is the in the past when there was no prison standards people were still committing crimes. The fact is when people do criminal acts, they intend to not get caught, so whatever the punishment is, it is not a deterrent.
2. There is a lot of evidence showing a link between a lack of education on a likely hood of committing crimes. Forcing them to only work is not going to hep solve the problem. It will just give more reason to rebel further.
3. Peace and order are maintained in prisons through a reward and punishment model. TV, weight rooms, sports equipment, are privileges that are taken away when behavior is bad. If you take it away altogether, there will be no reason to to riot all the time.
But we should probably make a prison system topic if we are going to debate this properly. | I am not talking about people who have any hope of being released. I firmly believe in reform for them. In fact I teach job skills to ex-cons. I am talking about lifers. Fuck them. They want to riot? I am sure I can find some CO's who'd love to try out some very painful less than leathal weaponry.
