Men and Abortion
I'm not sure this caveat is necessary but: I don't necessarily believe that abortion is a -positive- aspect of our culture but I don't believe it should be illegal.

This is with respect to abortion when the child was conceived by two consensual adults.

That being said: A woman can legally decide to abort a pregnancy. There is, in most cases, emotional and psychological stress and grief that accompany this decision. It is her right as defined, however.

This abortion means that the woman is no longer responsible for the caring of the (potential) child.

Maybe I'm too obsessed with "fairness", but shouldn't men be able to make that same decision with regards to their responsibility? If a woman can decide that the caring of a child, for whatever reason, is not something she wants to do, why is that if she DID decide to go through with the pregnancy, the man is legally required to provide monetary support and (socially required to provide more than that [see: "deadbeat dad"]) for the child for many years?

The question: If a woman is legally allowed to abrogate responsibility for a child, shouldn't a man have the same right?

I'm not about to give up jurisdiction over my body to anyone for any reason. And neither should women.

Can I get an AMEN?!?!?

Amen!

I would never wish on ANYBODY that they go through an abortion.. seriously.. It is a decision that haunts you till the day you die.

However you cannot take away the individual's right to make that decision.

However, the original post has a valid point. If a woman decides to have a child, the man is legally and fiscally responsible for taking care of the child. We have dead beat dad laws, that allow the government to withhold from a man's check funds to pay child support. If it truly is a woman's body and her right to choose, then if she chooses to have the baby then should she not accept the responsiblity?

Furthermore, if the man is responsible if a woman has a baby, then should he not have a say in whether or not she decides to have the baby.

Come now. If it truly were a woman's body and her right to choose, well then there would be no need for dead beat dad laws now would there. Just another in the long list of hypocrisy when it comes to woman and abortion.

Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles

You are absolutely right sarge. But that just goes to show you that it's not possible to legislate abortion away.

Any law framed will always be too unnuanced to deal with all cases fairly.

I do agree that some debate is needed about what extent the father may influence the decision to abort, but one can legitimately say that he is an integral part of the pregnancy. As such he also has certain rights, which may overlap the rights of a woman to decide over her body.

However this is a far cry from federal legislation banning abortions. Banning abortions take away a woman's right indiscriminately. Ensuring a man's right is not the same as banning someone else's.

First, I am a gay man and do not think I will ever have to personally have to deal with the issue of abortion. However, I do not think that the father should have the right to force the mother to carry the baby to full term.

If she does have the baby, he should pay support as the mother is the one that had to go through labor and most likely will raise the child alone.
One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you don't do anything at all.

It comes down to an issue of equity. If a woman wants a baby, the man has to pay for it for 18 years regardless of the mans desire. We give women a great amount of control in this area. Personally I think that if we are going to require 18 years of support out of men we should at least require 9 months of support from women if the man wants the baby. I'm not even advocating that she pay child support, but if the child is wanted then the child is wanted. Since it took two votes to create the baby it should take two to abort.
