I guess she and her husband are just supposed to give up sex.

Why won't the doctor tie her tubes?

Doctors often won't do permanent sterilization on women who are young.

My doctor didn't even suggest it for me until I was pregnant for Quinn at 40 years old. It was then she asked if I was interested in doing something 'more permanent'.

More often then not, I think they are just covering their asses. What happens if they sterilize a woman, then a couple years later the woman decides she wants more children? Then he gets sued.

Perhaps they would be more likely to do it if this wasn't such a lawsuit happy society.

I still don't understand. If the woman already has health issues, AND, already has children, what is the concern? Make the woman sign some sort of statement to protect from lawsuits. It sounds like bullshit to me.

And since when does a signature stop lawsuits?

The woman could simply say she was in a bad frame of mind when she signed it.

They don't do it because they know it's a hard procedure to reverse, and if a woman is young, usually under 35, they may say they don't want to have kids, but may change their mind in the future.

Tubal ligation is an invasive procedure, not as bad as it used to be, but still requiring hospitalization. I know, I had one. Vasectomies are much easier to do and to reverse, so doctors are much more likely to do them.

I understand your point regarding lawsuits. I still think a woman who already has kids, and has health issues, should be a good candidate for tubal ligation - especially if she requests it. It's too bad we have to let insurance companies and the fear of frivilous lawsuits dictate our lives.

Very few doctors are willing to perform elective surgery when you have no medical insurance.
Capitalism and healthcare don't mix - but America doesn't get that yet

But surely it doesn't cost much to have a vasectomy?

A lot less than raising a child!

You can do a vasectomy yourself. All you need are a sharp pair of scissors and a needle and thread.

Yes that's very true. And that's why the US healthcare system needs a Hillary to sort out the colossal mess created by greedy insurance companies and unscrupulous lawyers.

Even so I don't see how a woman could sue a doctor if she requested surgery and signed a disclaimer.

Have things really got that bad?

A few beers and chatting on the internet for a bit. I'm back in the International Zone (which is Baghdad) for a few weeks, so I haven't heard any mortars lately. There are lots of military helicopters buzzing overhead though. We work on Saturday, so Friday night has no special meaning.
