You're misreading or perhaps deliberately misleading...it's an abstinence-ONLY message that hurts kids. Why? Because (1) it is doomed to failure, and (2) when it does fail, kids don't know how to protect themselves. By the time kids get to be teen-agers, it isn't a matter of "letting" them do whatever they want, because they are going to. It is a matter of guiding them so that they see the value in doing the right thing, and so they WANT to do that.. | So in fact kids are not hurt by the message, they are hurt by IGNORING the message!
That's a crucial difference.
Your assumption that kids are going to have sex regardless is the message that can hurt.
Why are so resigned to defeat? Why don't you teach self-control and personal responsibility?

you are getting too bogged down in semantics and ideology. the point is when society pursues a policy of abstinence only sex education the rate of teenage pregnancies increases. when society pursues a policy of comprehensive sex education the rate of teenage pregnancies falls.
thus, if society wants less teenage pregnancies, we should be implementing comprehensive sex ed.
the issue is not one of morality, semantics or what is right and wrong. the issue is one of public education policy and measurable outcomes. Your assumption that kids are going to have sex regardless is the message that can hurt.
if sex hurts, you need to see a doctor.
sex is a good thing. why try to paint it as something bad? Why are so resigned to defeat? Why don't you teach self-control and personal responsibility?
excellent idea. self control in terms of why, where, when and with whom they have sex. responsibility in terms of using protection and contraception. |

Best to face reality and tackle the problem then to put your head in the sand. |

This is the kind of attitude that pervades liberal thinking.
Curiously it's the same mentality that opposes gun control laws because the criminals will ignore them anyway!
In that case why bother teaching children anything because in the end they'll do whatever they want.
And why bother having any laws because criminals will always break them!!

I'm not saying don't teach abstinence. I'm saying that to think that a teenager isn't going to have sex just because you don't talk about it is naive.
Knowledge is power. Giving your children the complete story is the best, rather then to bury your head in the sand and say "If I don't acknowledge it, it won't happen".
Oh, and BTW, most 'liberals' are for gun control laws. |

Are you often mistaken for sisters?
