| Jefferson :: Sorry, but once again, this post makes absolutely no sense - and has absolutely nothing to do with abortion.:: Hev :: The point is you are always bashing liberals yet you take typically Christian stances on topics and Jesus was a liberal!:: __________ Rubbish, Hev. If you insist on projecting a political characterization of Jesus, he was a fiscal liberal but a social conservative. Actually very much like the classic Catholic position... Think I'm wrong about this? How socially "liberal" is it to prohibit divorce except on grounds of adultery? Husband beating you up? Too bad, you're stuck with him til death do you part. Wife ran away ten years ago? Suck it up; you're still married to her and will never be free to marry anyone else. Last edited by Lidwen Wraith; 05-01-2006 at 08:09 PM. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| As far as I can tell, the Torah doesn't advocate abortion anyway. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| It is my understanding that Orthodox Jews take rather the same position as most prolifers: threat to the mother's life being a justification. They use the principal of rodef (the pursuer) in their reasoning (which is very sound reasoning imo). However, After the infant's head is presented - or the greater part of the body if it is a breech presentation - they desist from intervention on the grounds that they cannot choose between one life and another. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| I'll never understand why people think unwanted babies should enter this world regardless. That is far more cruel and immoral (IMO) than the process of abortion. --- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope --- There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. | Actually, it has nothing to do with the head, and everything to do with breathing. Traditionally, it is believed that an person does not have a soul until he starts breathing. The word "ruach" means wind, soul, and breath. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Hev, just because some people may not want the baby does not take away the right of a living human being to keep on living. I would not want my children to think their only mandate to live comes from whether or not they were "wanted" by other human beings. I should think such children would be very insecure (what if Mom and Dad - or whoever the caretakers are - should change their minds?) If people do not want or cannot raise their own children, quite a few other people are usually looking to adopt. Some children do not get adopted, which is very troubling... But having a tough time the first fourteen, sixteen, or eighteen years of your life does not condemn the rest of life to ruin. I have personal knowledge that this is true. | Dylan :: Actually, it has nothing to do with the head, and everything to do with breathing.:: Then you disagree with Rabbi Aaron Parry, who writes, "In Jewish law, a fetus transitions into a full-fledged "independent" human being when the head emerges from the womb..... How does this law apply practically? As mentioned, once the head is born, or if breech, the majority of the body, the baby is viewed as an independent life. Therefore, even if the mother's life is being threatened at the end of delivery, the Talmud clearly instructs that one life may not be set aside to ensure another life..." | |||||||||||||||||||||
